State Before Strategy
Oct 12, 2026A player lost three points in a row and looked toward the coach.
“What should I change?” he asked.
The coach answered:
“Before we change the plan, tell me what is happening inside you.”
The player paused.
“My breathing is short. My hand is tight. I’m rushing.”
The coach nodded.
“Then the strategy is not yet the problem. First, recover the person who must execute it.”
The player exhaled, loosened his grip, and felt his feet beneath him.
The strategy had not changed—but now he could use it.
The Teaching
Under pressure, we often search immediately for another solution:
- Hit harder.
- Play safer.
- Change direction.
- Attack more.
- Try something different.
But sometimes the plan is not failing.
Our state is making the plan unavailable.
A tense body changes timing. Shallow breathing narrows attention. Emotional urgency makes us rush decisions. More instructions can then create more confusion.
Before asking, “What should I do?”, ask:
“What state am I in?”
This is why, within SPORTmind, the Master comes before the Strategist.
First, manage yourself. Then read the situation and choose clearly.
🎯 State before strategy.
Why It Matters
A good decision requires a body and mind capable of carrying it.
This does not mean we must feel perfectly calm. Pressure is part of competition and life.
We simply need enough presence to recognize what is happening and choose our next action.
The objective is not to eliminate emotion.
It is to prevent emotion from making the decision for us.
Awareness → Experience → Action
Awareness
When performance begins to change, notice:
- What is your breathing doing?
- Where are you holding tension?
- Are you seeing the situation clearly?
- Are you choosing—or reacting?
Experience
Before making another correction:
- Breathe: Take one complete exhale.
- Feel: Notice your feet, posture, grip, and tension.
- See: Identify what the situation actually requires.
- Act: Choose one clear response and commit to it.
Action
During your next practice, pause three times and ask:
“Do I need a new strategy—or do I first need a different state?”
Reflection
How often do I change the plan when what I truly need is to return to myself?
Action for the Week
Before one important point, conversation, or decision each day:
- Exhale.
- Feel your body.
- Clarify your intention.
- Then act.
Closing
A clear plan cannot travel effectively through a disorganized state.
Before changing direction, steady the person who must choose it.
State before strategy.
